Briefing Leadership on Recovery Risk Without Alarmism

21 January 2026 · Sipho Dlamini

Boards and executives need clear language about backup exposure. Framing residual risk, investment choices, and verification evidence in plain terms.

Leadership briefings fail when they drown in product names. Speak in outcomes: how long critical services stay down, how much data may be lost, and how confident you are in those estimates.

Present residual risk after current controls, not a catalogue of every theoretical threat. Pair each residual risk with a concrete mitigation option and a rough cost band.

Show verification evidence: dates of last restore rehearsals, systems covered, and gaps still open. Confidence without dates is optimism.

Separate funding asks into protection of backup copies, recovery documentation, and rehearsal time. Mixing them into one vague ‘resilience upgrade’ obscures trade-offs.

Invite questions about acceptable downtime for named services. Those answers belong in the recovery plan and should be revisited when the business model changes.

Close with the next decision date and the owner of follow-up. Briefings without owners become archives.
